Every share you buy on the GSE goes through a licensed stockbroker. Choosing the right one is worth more attention than most beginners give it.

Confirm the License First

Before anything else, confirm any firm you are considering is genuinely licensed. Ghana's Securities and Exchange Commission maintains a public register of every licensed broker, adviser, and fund manager operating in the country, and checking it directly is one of the simplest, most important protective steps available to any investor.

What Actually Differs Between Brokers

Fees are the most obvious difference: commission or brokerage fees on each trade, and sometimes additional small regulatory or exchange fees, vary between firms and can change over time, so ask for a current, complete fee schedule before opening an account. Minimum account requirements and minimum trade sizes also vary, which matters more the smaller your first purchase is likely to be.

The quality of the online or mobile trading platform a broker offers is a real, practical difference too, since this is what you will actually use to check prices and place orders. Some brokers also differ in what funding methods they accept, bank transfer being universal, with some also accepting mobile money.

Well-Known Licensed Firms

Ghana has a number of licensed stockbroking firms, including Databank, IC Securities, EDC Investments, and NTHC, among others. This is not a ranking or a recommendation of any one firm; it is simply a starting list to compare, since the GSE's own website publishes the complete, current list of licensed brokers.

Questions Worth Asking Before You Choose

Ask each firm you are considering: what is your complete fee schedule, is there a minimum account size or minimum trade size, what funding methods do you accept, and can you walk me through placing my first order before I commit any money. A broker's willingness to answer these clearly is itself useful information.

What This Means for You

Comparing two or three licensed brokers before opening an account costs you nothing and can meaningfully affect what your first purchase actually costs. Our complete guide, Understanding the Ghana Stock Exchange, covers the rest of the account-opening process in full.
